Welcome to the Medieval Index!

img_2415The Medieval Index is a collection of useful websites for research into the Middle Ages. We define the Middle Ages (or Medieval period) as roughly between the years 500 CE to 1500 CE, and the focus is primarily the area of Europe. While we are an anglophone site, we hope to continually update the site with new links and resources for Medievalists regardless of language.

As of this introductory post, we have 100 links to webpages that are of use to scholars of the Middle Ages. Another 180 links are in the works, and we are finding more sites everyday. We plan to have reviews for many these sites on our blog, and these reviews can be reached by looking up sites in the general Index.

The Medieval Index is a work of love by Medievalists for Medievalists. However, we each have our own specialties, and thus certain websites may not be represented here, simply because we are not aware of them! We are always happy to received feedback and recommendations, especially if this leads to new websites we can add to the list. Please see the ‘Contact’ page for details.

In the process of organizing this project, we happened to come across AWOL (The Ancient World Online). AWOL has since become an inspiration for The Medieval Index, and we hope to be able to provide a similar service for the Middle Ages.
